This launch builds upon the depth of our family history content in Mexico, which includes more than 530 million records. Customers in Mexico now have access to the world’s largest consumer DNA match network, which includes over 1.5 million customers with Mexican descent, and the full AncestryDNA feature set, including ethnicity estimates, DNA matches and community assignments, and access to a growing library of traits that are influenced by your genes.

Ancestry offers a rich experience for people with Mexican heritage, and traces most of these customers to one or more of 87 specific DNA communities in Mexico, some, like Mezquital del Oro, Zacatecas, only 30 miles across. Additionally, with more than 1.5 million customers of Mexican descent, AncestryDNA provides a robust database that yields an average of 25,000 DNA matches for this group of customers. Add in our over 530 million family history records and customers in Mexico will have access to the tools they need to uncover their family’s history. Give More Meaning To Spring Cleaning With New Tools to Preserve Family Photos Forever

Did you inherit boxes of old photographs or photo albums that are slowly fading? Maybe you have a family member who is the keeper of those memories who doesn’t want to let them out of their sight? Well, today I am excited to announce that Ancestry® has new photo enhancement and sharing capabilities that will make it easier than ever before for our community to upload, scan, and share family photos then link them directly to people in your family tree.

A new partnership with Photomyne, a media preservation and archiving specialist company, allows us to bring their proprietary photo scanning and image enhancement technology onto the Ancestry platforms. Ancestry has also developed a new user experience called Ancestry Stories that offers a way to craft stories using images, share discoveries, and create meaningful moments. The new features are now available on both our web browser and mobile app platforms.

Upload, Scan and Share Your Images Today

With Photomyne, Ancestry now gives you an easier way to digitize old family photos, by scanning and uploading multiple photographs at once through the Ancestry mobile app. A process of cropping, rotation, and image enhancement is automatically applied. The images then appear in your tree gallery, ready for you to attach to your Ancestry family tree, helping you preserve images and memories.

In addition to using your mobile device as a scanner, you can also use the new technology on images already uploaded to your Ancestry gallery. The same auto-cropping, rotation, and enhancement tools will be applied.

Providing More Family History Discoveries
Once you’ve got those old pictures uploaded, you can then use the new Ancestry Stories feature on the Ancestry mobile app to combine photographs, saved historical records, and text to craft a story about any ancestor or relative in your family tree. You can then easily save that story to your tree and share it with family and friends. Doing this could even connect you to family members who might have additional information or photos you would never have found otherwise.

Today, we are proud to unveil another significant update to AncestryDNA communities for members with ties to Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia.

Updated Communities in Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia

As our DNA network grows and science advances, we can deliver even more value to our members, including more granular insights about their heritage and compelling new paths to learn about themselves using genetics. With updated communities, we can better pinpoint where in the world your ancestors were most likely from—and this means there may be some changes to your results.

Expanding our reach is important to Ancestry as is understanding your family history and through our communities updates we are able to do both. Our updated communities now include 87 in Italy, from Lombardy to Sicily, and 9 in Croatia and Slovenia. Ancestry® to Apply Handwriting Recognition Artificial Intelligence to Create a Searchable Index of the 1950 U.S. Census

Using new, proprietary Artificial Intelligence (AI) handwriting recognition technology, Ancestry® today announced it will deliver a searchable index of the 1950 U.S. Census to customers faster than ever before.

The 1950 U.S. Census is set to be released to the public in early April. With handwriting recognition technology, what previously took years to index, now will only take weeks. Ancestry anticipates the indexing of the 1950 Census to be completed and available on Ancestry.com this summer, with states released in real time upon completion.

Corporate Genealogist Crista Cowan explains the value of census records in powering meaningful discoveries saying, “The 1950 U.S. Census contains the details of names, ages, birthplaces, residences, and relationships of more than 150 million people. This glimpse into American households at a critical time in U.S. history will help people discover even more about the effects the Great Depression, World War II, and the beginning of the Baby Boom had on their families. Many of our customers will see themselves, parents or grandparents' names in this census for the first time, which will bring even more family stories to life.”

Cutting-Edge Technology to Power Discoveries

Ancestry developed machine learning algorithms to power our proprietary AI handwriting recognition technology. Ancestry created AI software that reads handwriting from historical documents and transcribes the data, enabling our community to easily and quickly search historical records. The technology uses a unique and iterative blend of machine and human evaluation which is based on an Ancestry-developed confidence score framework.
Given the unique nature of the 1950 U.S. Census and the unavailability of images in advance, Ancestry used a novel approach to simulate sample document images to ensure it is representative of anticipated variation in aged, inconsistent or damaged historical documents that may be encountered in order to train the AI. Employees recreated full-size census forms in a variety of handwriting styles before intentionally damaging some of these forms by ripping, burning, and pouring liquid on the forms in order to simulate the wear and tear that historical documents go through over time. Ancestry then re-scanned these forms, using them in our sample set to ensure our unique algorithms are prepared to support the anticipated condition of these 70-year-old historical documents.

Today, the highly anticipated 1950 U.S. Census was released! Ancestry is turning it into a fully searchable collection, available to everyone for free. In the meantime, you can browse all of the record images now.

For census records to be searchable, they have to be indexed, which means “reading” what the record image actually says. This process takes time, but we’re working around the clock to index the records state-by-state–and we’re using our new AI handwriting recognition technology–so you can find your relatives’ names even faster.

What’s exciting about the 1950 U.S. Census is that you will find information about more recent family members–with details like names and ages of members of the household, address, occupations and salaries, military service, and more.
