Give More Meaning To Spring Cleaning With New Tools to Preserve Family Photos Forever

Did you inherit boxes of old photographs or photo albums that are slowly fading? Maybe you have a family member who is the keeper of those memories who doesn’t want to let them out of their sight? Well, today I am excited to announce that Ancestry® has new photo enhancement and sharing capabilities that will make it easier than ever before for our community to upload, scan, and share family photos then link them directly to people in your family tree.

A new partnership with Photomyne, a media preservation and archiving specialist company, allows us to bring their proprietary photo scanning and image enhancement technology onto the Ancestry platforms. Ancestry has also developed a new user experience called Ancestry Stories that offers a way to craft stories using images, share discoveries, and create meaningful moments. The new features are now available on both our web browser and mobile app platforms.

Storytelling through Ancestry mobile

Upload, Scan and Share Your Images Today

With Photomyne, Ancestry now gives you an easier way to digitize old family photos, by scanning and uploading multiple photographs at once through the Ancestry mobile app. A process of cropping, rotation, and image enhancement is automatically applied. The images then appear in your tree gallery, ready for you to attach to your Ancestry family tree, helping you preserve images and memories.

In addition to using your mobile device as a scanner, you can also use the new technology on images already uploaded to your Ancestry gallery. The same auto-cropping, rotation, and enhancement tools will be applied.

Providing More Family History Discoveries
Once you’ve got those old pictures uploaded, you can then use the new Ancestry Stories feature on the Ancestry mobile app to combine photographs, saved historical records, and text to craft a story about any ancestor or relative in your family tree. You can then easily save that story to your tree and share it with family and friends. Doing this could even connect you to family members who might have additional information or photos you would never have found otherwise.

What Stories Will You Tell?
I can’t wait to get started on my great-grandmother’s precious photo albums that document 30 years of her own family story and to dive into my father’s photo collections to start creating these bite size stories I can easily share with my niece and nephews so they can learn even more about our family. Learn more about these offerings by visiting www.ancestry.com/RootsTech

I invite you to try out these amazing new tools. Then, share your images and family history discoveries on social media using #MyAncestryStory.

AncestryDNA® Announces Updated Communities for Members with Ties to Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia

As the global leader in family history and consumer genomics, Ancestry® continuously develops new ways for you to learn about yourself through DNA and empowers you to unlock more discoveries about your family history. With evolving DNA science, Ancestry updates its AncestryDNA communities to connect people through their DNA to places their ancestors likely lived and paths they might have followed to get there over the past 75-300 years. Today, we are proud to unveil another significant update to AncestryDNA communities for members with ties to Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia.

Updated Communities in Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia

As our DNA network grows and science advances, we can deliver even more value to our members, including more granular insights about their heritage and compelling new paths to learn about themselves using genetics. With updated communities, we can better pinpoint where in the world your ancestors were most likely from—and this means there may be some changes to your results.

Expanding our reach is important to Ancestry as is understanding your family history and through our communities updates we are able to do both. Our updated communities now include 87 in Italy, from Lombardy to Sicily, and 9 in Croatia and Slovenia. In case you missed our last community update at the end of last year, we’ve also added new communities that include 10 in Czechia, 61 in Poland, 15 in Slovakia & Hungary, 8 in Ukraine, 1 in Latvia & Estonia, 4 in Lithuania, 4 Russian communities, and 1 in the Transdanubia region.

Director of Scientific Communications Barry Starr explains the importance of community updates saying, “Communities updates can tell an even more granular story of where your ancestors were from and/or how they made their way from one place to another. For example, we went from 11 to 87 communities in Italy alone, providing more detailed understanding for our users with Italian heritage.”

Whether it’s discovering an even more detailed Italian heritage or uncovering your roots among communities across Eastern Europe, your next big discovery could be waiting in our latest communities update.

With the largest consumer DNA network, AncestryDNA continues to add communities around the world

What are communities?

A community is a group of AncestryDNA members who are likely to have relatives from a population of common ancestors, people who lived in the same place around the same time or traveled from the same place around the same time.

Our Genetic Communities™ technology detects groups of AncestryDNA members who are most likely connected because they have relatives who came from the same place (such as Munster, Ireland) or culture (such as Sephardic Jews or Basque). Using our Genetic Communities™ technology, we analyze genetic connections to identify groups of AncestryDNA members. We then use public family trees, ethnicity data, and historical records to determine past peoples and places members of this group likely have in common.

Ethnicity regions in your ethnicity estimate connect you to world populations your DNA looks most like. Communities typically show recent people and more specific places your DNA connects you to.

The strength behind our communities is our unparalleled DNA network of over 20 million people and the largest network of family trees, with over 100 million. You can discover your origins from over 1,500 regions worldwide.

Revisiting Your Results

We encourage you to look at your DNA Story to see if you have a new community waiting to be explored and shared with your family and loved ones.

As new people continue to join our AncestryDNA network and science and technology continue to evolve, we will continue to provide updates for our members. It’s just one of the many ways Ancestry helps you learn more about your family, your past, and yourself.

Ancestry® to Apply Handwriting Recognition Artificial Intelligence to Create a Searchable Index of the 1950 U.S. Census

Access to this highly anticipated census collection will be available to search
sooner than any previous census collection

Using new, proprietary Artificial Intelligence (AI) handwriting recognition technology, Ancestry® today announced it will deliver a searchable index of the 1950 U.S. Census to customers faster than ever before.

The 1950 U.S. Census is set to be released to the public in early April. With handwriting recognition technology, what previously took years to index, now will only take weeks. Ancestry anticipates the indexing of the 1950 Census to be completed and available on Ancestry.com this summer, with states released in real time upon completion.

Corporate Genealogist Crista Cowan explains the value of census records in powering meaningful discoveries saying, “The 1950 U.S. Census contains the details of names, ages, birthplaces, residences, and relationships of more than 150 million people. This glimpse into American households at a critical time in U.S. history will help people discover even more about the effects the Great Depression, World War II, and the beginning of the Baby Boom had on their families. Many of our customers will see themselves, parents or grandparents' names in this census for the first time, which will bring even more family stories to life.”

Cutting-Edge Technology to Power Discoveries

Ancestry developed machine learning algorithms to power our proprietary AI handwriting recognition technology. Ancestry created AI software that reads handwriting from historical documents and transcribes the data, enabling our community to easily and quickly search historical records. The technology uses a unique and iterative blend of machine and human evaluation which is based on an Ancestry-developed confidence score framework.
Given the unique nature of the 1950 U.S. Census and the unavailability of images in advance, Ancestry used a novel approach to simulate sample document images to ensure it is representative of anticipated variation in aged, inconsistent or damaged historical documents that may be encountered in order to train the AI. Employees recreated full-size census forms in a variety of handwriting styles before intentionally damaging some of these forms by ripping, burning, and pouring liquid on the forms in order to simulate the wear and tear that historical documents go through over time. Ancestry then re-scanned these forms, using them in our sample set to ensure our unique algorithms are prepared to support the anticipated condition of these 70-year-old historical documents.

Calling All Family History Buffs
Ancestry and FamilySearch volunteers are partnering to evaluate the handwriting recognition extraction and ensure a complete and accurate index. Those interested in volunteering to help should visit familysearch.org/1950Census to learn more.

Highlights corporate responsibility commitment to building more connected, sustainable and resilient communities for future generations.

TORONTO, ON - March 23, 2022 – Ancestry®, the global leader in family history and consumer genomics, today published its first Impact Report, outlining the company’s approach to corporate responsibility and detailing key initiatives in three core corporate citizenship areas: ethical business practices; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); and community impact.

“As we strive to help everyone discover, craft and connect around their family story, we have a responsibility to set the bar for ethical industry innovation,” said Deborah Liu, Ancestry President and CEO. “Our report details our commitment to growing our impact in ways that embrace diversity in our organization and products, create more connected and resilient communities, and reduce our environmental footprint.”

To ensure continued progress, Ancestry set measurable goals and commitments aligned to its corporate responsibility strategy at the beginning of 2021:

Ethical Business Practices

Continue to publish a bi-annual Transparency Report detailing all government and law enforcement requests for data.

Move to use of recycled materials in all AncestryDNA kits by 2023 and minimize kit packaging size to reduce waste to landfill by 35% by 2025.

Cut Ancestry’s carbon emissions by 15% by 2025 across our real estate footprint and supply chain operations.

The Wait is Over! The 1950 U.S. Census Now Available on Ancestry®, Powering Countless New Discoveries

Ancestry® offers new features to help you understand, save, connect, and share discoveries from the 1950 Census and beyond.

Today, the highly anticipated 1950 U.S. Census was released! Ancestry is turning it into a fully searchable collection, available to everyone for free. In the meantime, you can browse all of the record images now.

For census records to be searchable, they have to be indexed, which means “reading” what the record image actually says. This process takes time, but we’re working around the clock to index the records state-by-state–and we’re using our new AI handwriting recognition technology–so you can find your relatives’ names even faster.

We have already made some states searchable, including Wyoming and Delaware! Don’t see your state? Sign up here to get notified when it’s ready.

What’s exciting about the 1950 U.S. Census is that you will find information about more recent family members–with details like names and ages of members of the household, address, occupations and salaries, military service, and more. In fact, if you were born before 1975, you are likely to find your parents in the 1950 Census if they were U.S. residents–and if you were born before 2000, you could have a grandparent who was enumerated.

The Power of Exploring the Census on Ancestry

By pairing this new 1950 Census collection with billions of other Ancestry records, Ancestry can provide you with more details of your family’s story and show you a more complete picture of not only what their life was like at a moment in time, but also how it had changed over the decades.

New Product Features

Ancestry will debut exclusive product features to make the most comprehensive and searchable 1950 U.S Census index, including:

1950 Census District Finder: By combining a census enumeration map overlay with a modern-day interactive map, you will be able to compare landmarks, roads, new developments, and other marked features on the maps to see how much has changed over the years, and how much is still the same. This innovative feature will allow users to search for cities and even street addresses, and take you directly to your family’s enumeration district. From there, you can browse the census images directly while you wait for the full index.

A Personalized Guide to the Census: The Record Tour feature will provide a step-by-step guided experience, showing what’s in the census record and what it means. It can help people better understand their story and reveal new details about their relatives and their world in 1950.

AI Powering Quicker Discoveries: Ancestry developed precise machine learning to power its proprietary AI Handwriting Recognition technology to make all of the fields of these records searchable, rather than just names–enabling anyone to quickly and more accurately find family members. For example, someone looking for John Smith may see hundreds of names, making it difficult to know which one is their ancestor. The Ancestry AI helps better pinpoint specific people to reduce the time it takes to make discoveries.

Look at Your Ancestor’s Life Over Time: Get snapshots of relatives’ lives across the decades by comparing multiple records–even adding additional historical context to discover what remained the same and what changed from one decade to another. For example, a great-grandfather may have been a factory worker in the 1930 Census and later a factory owner in the 1950 Census.

Short Shareable Stories, Without Any Research: Simply input a grandparent’s or parent’s name, where they might have lived, and birth year and you could get brief shareable stories about an ancestor’s life at the time. With a few clicks, Ancestry technology can quickly extract key details from 1940 U.S. Census records and add historical context in short story form, including insights like where they lived, if they owned their home and its value, the level of education of everyone in the household, and more. Once the 1950 Census is fully indexed, this experience will provide stories using those records.

What You Can Learn Using the 1950 Census

The 1950 U.S. Census provides a fascinating snapshot of an era in our collective history. Taken as a whole, it shows trends in the country—jobs, education, family size, and more. However, the magic of the census happens as you look closer—to the cities, the districts, the streets, the addresses, and the individuals who resided there. You can learn rich details about your family’s life at the time, such as:

Address and whether a farm or ranch, as well as if the property was 3 or more acres

Names of head of household, all household members and relationships

How race and gender were recorded

Age at last birthday

Marital status

State or country where born, or whether naturalized

Details about working, employment status, and hours worked (14 and older)

Nature of work and business (14 and older)

Additionally, 20% of the population answered supplemental questions, such as:

Whether living in the same house, same county, or on a farm a year ago

County and state where living a year ago

Highest grade level attended, whether finished, and whether attended school since February 1950

How many weeks looking for work or weeks working (14 and older)

Nature of work and business (14 and older)

Wages earned and household income

Whether they served in Armed Forces

Covers the Continental US and Territories of Alaska and Hawaii, as well as American Samoa, the Canal Zone, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and some smaller island territories

Find Your Ancestors’ Stories

Ancestry invites everyone to join in celebrating the release of the 1950 U.S. Census by sharing your discoveries using #MyAncestryStory. They talk about why diverse teams in tech build better products - from design all the way through the review process, it all matters. And when it comes to talking about race at work, Deb thinks pretending it doesn’t affect the workplace only alienates your employees. Deb’s book “Take Back Your Power” is all about lessons from tech, leadership, and motherhood. It will be out Fall 2022.

AncestryDNA® expands to new markets globally

Updated OCT 18, 2022.

AncestryDNA® has expanded to new markets, and is now available to consumers in over 60 countries and territories. Ancestry’s simple, step-by-step DNA test reveals an individual’s unique ethnic background and helps match them to new relatives. AncestryDNA provides a precise ethnicity estimate with greater geographic detail and in-depth historical insights that connect people to the places in the world where their family’s story began.

You can find a list all countries where AncestryDNA is available here.

AncestryDNA is the largest global consumer DNA network with more than 22 million people with ancestry from nearly every country in the world. With more than 1,500 distinct regions and nearly 1 trillion DNA matches, there’s endless opportunities to find family connections and better understand the different regions that make up your estimate.

Only AncestryDNA is powered by SideView technology, a first-of-its-kind scientific innovation that provides insights into which parent an individual inherited their genetics from, without requiring a parent to be tested. AncestryDNA also includes Traits, enabling consumers to discover 35+ of their most interesting traits and explore how their genes might have influenced a range of appearance, sensory, fitness, nutrient, and other personal characteristics—like endurance fitness, heart rate recovery, and more.

“We are delighted to bring AncestryDNA to new customers. This global expansion for Ancestry builds upon the breadth and depth of our market-leading global DNA product and community,” said Brian Donnelly, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AncestryDNA and Ancestry International. “People in each of these markets will now have access to the full suite of AncestryDNA features including ethnicity estimates and inheritance, DNA matches, community assignments, and reports about traits that are influenced by their genetics. In addition, these customers have the ability to access our growing library of family history records, which includes over 30 billion digital records from more than 80 countries of origin to support their genealogy and family history research.”
