Ancestry is seeking a Senior Search Engineer to join our backend search team. In this role your work enables our application teams to serve over 18 billion historical records to our Ancestry customers seamlessly across multiple platforms. As a member of the search team you will develop, maintain and manage a large scale Solr-Lucence based service, along with the data pipeline needed to support such a system. You will also partnering data sciences team to develop models that improve matching and relevance at scale. You will leverage your expertise building large scale distributed search systems. You will have a high bar for quality and think about long-term solutions to ensure our systems are healthy and scale for international growth. You partner well, and will take the lead on projects that range from implementing experiments to enabling new platform capabilities. Successful candidates must be organized, analytical, and adept at working in a team environment.

What you do...

  • Design, develop and deploy search software solutions that has a high impact on Ancestry customers.
  • Develop core technologies required to scale search systems.
  • Develop tools, processes and metrics to help build high quality search pipeline.
  • Bring creative ideas for existing and future Ancestry products and leverage the power of data to solve complex problems.
  • Works in collaboration with Data Scientists to constantly optimize the performance of the search engine.
  • Mine existing data for insights and recommends additional sources of data for improvements.

Who you are...

  • 2+ years production experience in the following areas: Lucene based search engines - Solr and/or Elastic Search with indices larger than 1TB
  • Experience with highly scalable, distributed systems and specifically scaling search architectures.
  • History of working independently and collaborating in small teams to deliver production infrastructure
  • Experience in concurrent programming and data structures
  • Experience skills in object-oriented design and development
  • Experience in JVM based languages (Java, Scala) and Python
