The DNA Science team’s goal is to deliver the next generation of consumer genomic tests to shed light on human diversity, origins, and relationships. As a Staff Bioinformatics Engineer, you will help deliver on this mission by using your software engineering and genomics skills to support research and new product development for Ancestry’s direct-to-consumer DNA test. In this critical role, you will work in multidisciplinary teams to build complex genomic data analysis pipelines, work with cutting-edge technology to engineer huge datasets, and empower scientific discovery with a scalable cloud infrastructure. 

What You'll Do:

  • Participate in requirements refinement, architecture discussions, design specification reviews, and test plan development for features across the full stack
  • Write clean, maintainable code and documentation using engineering best practices.
  • Write unit, component, and integration tests
  • Design, implement, and test backend APIs
  • Work with quality engineering teams to design test plans for developed software
  • Research new tools, technologies, and test processes for software developments
  • Provide informal leadership to junior developers within the team and act as a coach and mentor in all spheres of the Software Development Life Cycle.
  • Utilize systems thinking and strong technical expertise to progress critical software development projects through all aspects of the Software Development Life Cycle; from conception to testing to product delivery.

Who You Are:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Genetics Engineering or other quantitative field with 3 years of professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Expert knowledge of HPC or cloud solutions using AWS
  • Expertise in several of the following: Python, R, AWS, SQL, Java, C++, Shell scripting, git, and Hadoop/Spark in a distributed Unix environment
  • Ability to debug and optimize research grade software
  • Self-starter with strong communication skills and sense of ownership to complete projects independently while thriving in team environment
  • Able to apply feedback in a professional manner
