Ancestry is seeking a strategic and experienced attorney to manage employment law matters across our global operations. Reporting to the AGC for Litigation and Employment, this role will work closely with the People team to ensure compliance with complex employment and labor laws while supporting the company’s growth and innovation, investigating and resolving disputes, and advising on other strategic initiatives impacting Ancestry’s employees.
The ideal candidate has both expertise in global employment law and the ability to provide practical, business-minded advice across multiple jurisdictions. This role requires balancing compliance, employee engagement, and cultural considerations in a fast-moving, global environment.
What You Will Do
Advise on all aspects of global employment law, including hiring, performance management, compensation, benefits, accommodations, investigations, and terminations.
Partner with the global People team and manage relationships with outside counsel to ensure compliance with U.S. federal, state, and local labor laws as well as local employment laws in the company’s non-US locations (including GDPR).
Provide guidance on cross-border employment issues such as global mobility, remote work arrangements, immigration, etc.
Monitor evolving global employment regulations, regulatory requirements and trends, and provide insights to proactively mitigate risks.
In partnership with the People team, draft and update employee handbooks, workplace policies, template employment agreements, and benefits materials to ensure alignment and compliance across the company.
Develop and deliver training on global compliance topics (anti-discrimination, harassment prevention, data privacy in employment, workplace investigations).
Support global audits (e.g., wage & hour, pay equity, health & safety).
Support and conduct global workplace investigations to ensure fair, consistent, and legally sound processes across different jurisdictions.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support global workforce strategies and scalable employment practices.
Advise on employment issues in corporate transactions, including M&A, integrations, restructurings, and global expansion.
Who You Are
5+ years of relevant legal experience, with at least 1 year of in-house experience advising on employment matters for a global technology or consumer-facing company (750+ employees). Experience at a top-tier law firm is preferred.
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school with strong academic performance and an active member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar.
Experience managing employment issues across multiple states and countries, including California and Europe.
Experience with global mobility, cross-border employment agreements, and multi-country compliance programs.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills; able to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization, and articulate complex legal issues clearly in both written and verbal formats.
Self-starter who can manage multiple priorities and projects independently, while staying aligned with business objectives and evolving legal requirements.
Highly self-aware and low-ego. You understand that high-stakes legal work is more effective (and enjoyable) when done with a sense of humor, deep respect for colleagues, and a focus on collective success. We value team members who bring energy, perspective, and enjoyment to their work without taking themselves too seriously.
